During coverage of the women’s gymnastics at the Tokyo Olympics, the BBC had a commentator on air with a voice that hundreds recognised as Johnny Vegas. Little did they know, it was actually a commentator named Craig Heap they were listening to, not the famous comedian.
Shockwaves were sent through social media as hundreds rushed to tweet about the voice they had heard on air.
One said: “Got the Olympics on BBC sound like they have Johnny Vegas commentating on the gymnastics.”
A second added: “Has anyone else noticed that Johnny Vegas is commentating on the gymnastics at the Olympics? #Olympics #gymnastics”
A third said: “One of the co-commentators on the gymnastics at the Olympics sounds just like Johnny Vegas.”
Another added: “Can’t take the women’s gymnastics final seriously with Johnny Vegas co-commentating on the BBC #Tokyo2020.”
One person noted that Mr Heap and Mr Vegas’ accents could sound similar because they grew up in towns not far from each other.
They said: “Gymnastics commentator Craig Heap is from Burnley. Johnny Vegas is from St Helens which is over 40 miles away.”
Others felt that people were making the mistake because they could not differentiate between northern accents.
