Breaking Bread in Bristol to close one month early

Organisers of the pop-up tipi village of bars and restaurants on Clifton Down have decided to close a month early.

Breaking Bread, which is a collaboration between Pasta Loco, The Pipe & Slippers, Team Love and chef Josh Eggleton, had originally planned to carry on with the unique event until early October but have decided that the August bank holiday will be the closing weekend.

The project, which created more than 100 jobs, was launched during 2020 as an antidote to the pandemic by providing a safe new space for people to eat and drink. It provided a vital boost to the city’s hospitality scene.

Breaking Bread has attracted thousands of visitors since it returned to the Downs in the spring and organisers have a special event lined up for the final weekend on August 28 and 29.

Co-founder Tom Paine says: “August will be a final full month of trading up on the Downs. We are determined to go out on a high with an amazing programme of events both in The Pipe and Lovers and the Pergola.

“Of course, it will also be the last chance to sample the delicious menu from this one-off collaboration between Josh Eggleton from The Pony & Trap and Ben & Joe Harvey from Pasta Loco, supporting local independent producers and showcasing the finest ingredients that the South West produces.”

This one-off event over the August bank holiday will feature live entertainment, markets and traders as well as unique dining experiences within Home Grown, the collaborative restaurant between The Pony & Trap and Pasta Loco.

Details regarding the closing weekend event will be announced in due course.

Tom says: “We are already looking pretty busy for August so if you haven’t had the chance to eat with us yet, or you want to come back for second helpings, don’t hesitate to bag yourself a reservation.

“We are making some extra special plans for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of the month, so look out for more details of a full weekend of amazing food producers, street food, music and entertainment to celebrate the end of the summer in style.”

Both Home Grown and The Pergola (Breaking Bread’s private hire venue) will close following the bank holiday weekend.

However, the Pipe & Lovers will remain open until Sept 4-5, to accommodate visitors to both Love Saves the Day festival and The Idles concert, both taking place on The Downs.
