Bookings surge after more green list countries have been added for travel | UK | News

Hays Travel have recorded a 193 per cent rise in bookings from Thursday to Friday. From 4am on Sunday, holidaymakers who are double jabbed coming back from France are no longer required to quarantine.

The new countries added to the green list include Austria, Germany, Latvia, Norway and Slovakia.

More countries will be added to the amber list including India, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar.

However, transport secretary Grant Shapps has not ruled out the possibility of countries changing from the amber to red list in the future.

Dame Irene Hays, Chairwoman of Hays Travel said: “What we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks is a lot of inquiries and so we had many people who were ready to book them.”

She told Sky News: “As long as people are careful where they book, the travel agent will look after the two things which are most important — one is their health and safety, and second is their financial security.

“Just to say that at the moment, we will see some of the best prices we’ve seen in years.”

Steve Heap Chief executive of Jet2 commented on Jet2’s 250% rise in bookings to countries which have been added to amber and green list countries.

He told the Daily Mail: “The latest traffic light review from the UK government comes just in time for the peak summer season.

“It is no surprise to see a sudden spike in bookings to destinations on the green and amber lists, as we know that there is enormous demand out there from holidaymakers who cannot wait to get away.”

This comes after the Mail on Sunday revealed that second jabs for young people have been reduced to six weeks to enable them to go on holiday abroad during the summer.

However, some travel companies were critical of the number of countries in the green list.

Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, said: “Alongside the continuation of expensive testing and a much smaller than hoped for expansion of the green list — which makes less sense by the day, given where we are with the vaccination programme — this is yet another blow to the sector and families desperate to get away.”
